Krabi is a Town as well as the name of the Province of Krabi, which also includes neighbouring islands. It is a great cluster of destinations, which should have something to suit most people. I passed through in March 2026 to visit some of the most backpacker friendly spots.
Krabi Town
Krabi is mostly known for its natural beauty, so the main town is less of a draw than its surroundings. Its a medium sized town with your usual nightmarket etc. You can be excused if you would rather skip on to the more scenic areas.
Ao Nang
Ao Nang is a funny spot. It is a convenient springboard into the surounding areas. There are plenty of hotels, restaurants and bars, plus a mediocre beach (mediocre by Krabi standards anyway). You will be at a loss to decide where to eat – and the restuarants seem to cater for multiple cuisines all at once. Italian, Indian, Thai? You got it! I personally would say it was much less appealing to any of the other popular Krabi locations.
Railay Beach Area
I group a few locations here using Railay as the epicentre. Railay has a East and West beach – the west is the more famous of the two, while the east has a few more hotels, and restuarants along with mangroves and a floating pier. The two are connected by some winding alleys lined with some very quirky and fun eateries and bars. It has a great vibe in the evening if you are staying, rather than daytripping from Ao Nang.
There are other beaches, Phra Nang beach which is quite spectacular and must-see. Next door is Tonsai Beach, which is a much more quiet affair, popular with backpackers and rock climbers.
I’ve created a more in depth guide to this area along with an interactive 360 tour here
Phi Phi Islands
I visited here recently and expected the worst. Yes the main tourist area on Phi Phi Don is built up and quite busy, but it was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. It certainly is a party destination if you want it to be, but some careful hotel selections can make sure you get some sleep.
Koh Lanta
Still a jewel in the crown of Thailand in my opinion. Rustic driftwood beach bars still exist along the shorelines and many old timer travellers still says it echos the golden years of travel in Thailand. If Ao Nang and Phi Phi Islands are not your jam, this will be.
Phuket
I have a confession. I have never visited Phuket on the reputation for being a spoilt, concrete island. So I cannot be entirely objective on my guide here. Needless to say – it may suit those wanting the comforts of a city on the beach.
