Koh Phangan (Koh Pha-Ngan) Guide

Home / Thailand / Koh Phangan / Koh Phangan (Koh Pha-Ngan) Guide

Koh Pha-Ngan has been a backpacker favourite for many reasons. It has a lot of diverse places to stay, beautiful beaches and an “alternative” slant. Recent years have attracted more and more long-term stayers and it has been a magnet for the more ‘spiritual’ types, and is also popular with digital nomads. Also for some reason, in recent years, prices appear to have gone up dramatically for accommodation.
Everyone knows Koh Phangan for its full moon parties. But the island has a lot more to offer. The south coast and especially Haad Rin beach are the most crowded areas, but there is a huge range of accommodation to suit everyone. If your stay is going to be near the full moon party dates, be sure to book well ahead as everything gets sold out well in advance. Read our guide to the Full Moon Party here. Or if you are feeling adventiourous – check out our experimental “Virtual Koh Phangan” in 3D.

How to Get There

From Bangkok, there are a few options to get to Koh Phangan. The fastest way is to fly directly to the neighbouring island, Koh Samui. Then take a boat across. The next fastest is to fly to Surat Thani, then bus to the Ferry Pier then boat.

Otherwise, if you have time to spare or are on a budget, you can catch a train or a bus to Surat Thani and then take another bus and then a boat to the Island. However, making things simpler and having less to think about, you can often get a complete transfer package from some tourist agencies which will involve a complete bus trip and boat ticket all in one. With this service, you just get on the first bus and follow their instructions till you get onto the ferry.
